Dr. H.V Hande
On his 98th birthday, I humbly submit the conversations and knowledge enrichment I was bestowed with during the pandemic.
An conversational analysis of the content in
Kamba Ramayanam in Tamil and the work of Sri.HV Hande in English
He will be
available in the mornings after 10 AM until noon for any discussions on the
subject. I was always privileged to call him and his implicit response always
astonished me. He always remembers any book for discussion by page
number and the paragraph positioning.
A great author and a éminence grise,
he always persuaded me to read the English version, or to satirize a chapter,
understand the epic in its entirety and compare it with the original Tamil
poems of Kamban.
I was always swayed by the literary
work that pivoted around the indomitable characters, the epic's plot, the
settings and the construct of the Tamil poem in Kamba Ramayanam to understand
the emotions, feelings and thoughts, even though the story is far into the
past.
Here in one piece of work done under Dr.Hande's gracious guidance:
Ayodhya Kaandam - Leaving The
City- As Translated into English prose by Dr. HV Hande in his book of Kamba
Ramayanam.
The whole of Ayodhya was steeped in
sorrow. The flags on the huge mountain-like palaces ceased to fly and became
immobile; the royal drums became silent while different types of musical
instruments remained quiet with none to play them.
The dust in the streets near the walls settled down
because of the rain of tears flowing on the ground. Kitchens lost their smoke,
lofty halls lost the smoke from Aquila, cups intend to feed the parrots
lost their milk and children lying in gem-studded cradles became depressed
without the womenfolk.
The faces of people lost their glow as if
they were dead; the clouds lost their moisture; sacred temples discarded their
usual worship, bees discarded the pleasure of sucking nectar from flowers,
while rutting elephants discarded their rutting joy.
The quality of giving shade got,
separated from the umbrella; flowers got separated from the hair of women
with long eyes, heroes' anklets got separated from their ankles, Manmatha's
arrows lost their fire, and loving nightingales got separated from each other.
Horses were bereft of the jingling bells tied
around their necks; drums were bereft of their thunder; streets were bereft of
the rumble of rolling chariots and appeared like rivers 'without the sound of
flowing water.
In the regal pathways there was no sound
forthcoming from the drums; the usual music coming from the yazh was absent;
festivals meant for the gods did not produce any sounds. In fact there was no
sound in Ayodhya except for the wailing of the people!

note: The above Poetical
description and the English rendering of the poetical phrases are description
of the City of Ayodhya, when Lord Rama renounced the
crown and started his journey for exile. These are references from Ramayana
written by various authors.

part of Atharvana Vedam.
Scholars have
different interpretations about the Sanskrit verses. The word “Ayodhya” in Sanskrit Grammar can be read as a Proper noun as well as an
adjective - अयोध्येन / अयोध्यः
If we consider the
word “Ayodhya” as an adjective, then the meaning
is “invincible / invulnerable / unconquerable / indestructible”
The above
grammatical Prayogam and meaning has been described by, Sāyaṇācārya (14th
century – Vijayanagaram – Harihara-Bhukka Raya regime) – Belonging to Barathwaja
Gothram, Krishna Yajur , a Vidyarthi of Sringeri, who was also a
Sanskrit Mimamsa scholar.
